SETUP

Install TeamViewer on Windows

The installer offers three setup paths during first launch.

  1. 1
Download build 15.79.4.0 from our download page and verify the SHA256 hash.
  2. 2
Choose install type: Default installation (most users), unattended access (Host for always-on machines), or Run only (portable, no permanent install).
  3. 3
Select usage: Commercial, non-commercial, or both. Personal family help qualifies as non-commercial. Client IT work requires a license.
  4. 4
Accept the license agreement and wait for installation to finish. Launch from the desktop shortcut or Start menu.
CONNECT

Start a remote control session

  1. 1
Open TeamViewer on both computers. The host sees their ID and temporary password under Allow remote control.
  2. 2
On the technician PC, enter the host ID in Control remote computer under Partner ID.
  3. 3
Choose Remote control or File transfer, then click Connect.
  4. 4
Enter the password shown on the host screen when prompted. End the session from the session toolbar when done.
FIX

Connection drops after a few minutes

Users on the free personal license sometimes report sessions ending after roughly five minutes, especially during extended support calls. This is often a licensing detection issue, not a network fault.

  1. Confirm both parties selected non-commercial / personal use during install if the session is for family or friends.
  2. If you provide paid IT support to clients, purchase a commercial license. Free sessions may be limited or interrupted.
  3. Update both sides to 15.79.4.0 to rule out version-specific bugs.
  4. Check that neither firewall nor sleep settings disconnect idle network adapters mid-session.
FIX

Connection fails or behaves oddly

Uptodown and TeamViewer documentation note that outdated versions on either host or guest are the most common cause of failed cross-platform sessions.

  1. On both devices, open Help → About and compare version numbers.
  2. Upgrade the older client to 15.79.4.0 from the download page.
  3. Restart both applications after updating.
  4. For mobile connections, confirm the app is installed on both the phone and the PC, not just one side.
SECURITY

Antivirus blocks the installer or app

  1. Verify the installer SHA256 matches the value on download.html.
  2. Temporarily disable real-time scanning only to complete a verified install, then re-enable protection.
  3. Add TeamViewer.exe and the install folder to your antivirus exclusion list after hash confirmation.
  4. Never disable antivirus for files you cannot verify. See trust policy.
LICENSE

Commercial use detected popup

TeamViewer monitors usage patterns. Supporting clients, working from an office domain, or frequent long sessions can trigger a commercial license prompt on the free tier.

  1. If use is genuinely personal (helping family), submit a private-use verification request through TeamViewer account settings.
  2. If you bill for IT support, purchase the appropriate business license. Continuing on free violates terms.
  3. Do not use license cracks or patched binaries. They cannot be verified and may contain malware.
TIPS

Best practices

Never grant access to strangers. TeamViewer warns users to end any session with untrusted callers immediately.
Use strong random passwords and regenerate the session password after each support call.
Enable 2FA on accounts used for unattended access.
Keep software updated to receive security patches included in 15.79.x releases.
Verify downloads with SHA256 before every fresh install.
